Yes, there is fantastic paddleboarding opportunities across Alabama in the winter. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind.

Weather:

As an Alabamian or anyone from the Southeast USA knows, you can experience all 4 seasons in a single day November-April. There are many-of-days during late fall, winter and spring in Alabama that provide exceptional paddling, you may just have to be flexible. Weather awareness becomes critical during these months. Weather apps are fine, but I recommend verifying information with The National Weather Service

Pro Tip 1: Click the Hourly Weather Forecast toward the bottom of the page. You can adjust the graph day & time and see temps, winds, cloud cover, precipitation, etc. hour by hour for that location.

Pro Tip 2: Click the Rivers and Lakes tab for specific locations and then put in the location where you are paddling

Clothing:

When you plan on going on the water during these months, dress for the swim as they say in kayaking circles. The rule of thumb is adding the water and air temperature together, if its 100 or less, consider a drysuit or drysuit combo. Synthetic layering becomes essential as you can take off/put on as needed.

Pro Tip1: dry pants and dry tops combos work well for SUP and give you more flexibility. Looks at NRS options or other manufacturers.

Pro Tip 2: Neoprene booties & Gloves, a neck gaiter, and a synthetic cap are your friends!

Float Plan:

Trip planning becomes even more important during these months. Know your route, know your emergency exit points, paddle with a friend. Consider starting off with shorter, more well know paddle outings at first.

Pro Tip: Give your float plan to a dependable friend who is staying on shore, just don’t forget to call them when you reach the take-out!

Summary:

Winter paddling is a great way to shake off the winter blues, get fresh air, exercise and see an abundance of nature. There are generally less people/boats on the water, so you often have the lake or river to yourself.

Think through your trip, check and dress for the weather (and water temps), bring water, snacks and a communication device, file your float plan and as always wear your PFD!
